In May 2008, 5 students from different high schools in Madrid (Spain) went to Chicago to take part in the Global Classrooms - Model UN Conference, held on May 2nd:
Rosa Lebkowski - I:E.S. "Avenida de los Toreros" - Madrid
Andrés Riofrío - I.E.S "Parque de Lisboa" - Alcorcón (Madrid)
Elías Efler - I.E.S "San Juan Bautista" - Madrid
Nadia Pavlyuk - I.E.S. "Ciudad de Jaen" - Orcasitas (Madrid)
Javier Sánchez - I.E.S. "Isaac Albeniz" - Leganés (Madrid)
Isabel Marcitllach , teacher in I.E.S. "Avenida de los Toreros" - Madrid - Chaperone.
These students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of E.S.O. took part in debates in English, in the General Assembly committee, on an important topic: Access to Primary Education. They acted as delegates, representing the following countries: Belarus, Moldova and Guyana. The trip to Chicago was the culmination of a process that began in February 2008 with about 330 students participating in the Model UN Conference, held at the Saint Luis University campus in Madrid.
They also visited Clemente HS in Chicago where they shadowed students and also took part in different classes.
It was a great experience for all of them and they had the opportunity to meet students from different countries and to share their experiences with them.
MY EXPERIENCE AT THE MODEL UN CONFERENCE IN CHICAGO
by Rosa Lebkowski
Everything started when Eric, the Fulbright English teacher, said "UN." Suddenly (after hard work), I was in Chicago: I couldn't believe it! Chicago is very different from Madrid. The streets are beautiful and clean. The lake was, too. People were very kind: when we asked for a station or a shop, everybody helped us. There are many places to visit in Chicago: the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, the zoo, Lincoln Park, Millennium Park, etc. Millennium Park was very interesting; it had a great bean sculpture that mirrored the city and a fountain, which allowed you to walk on the water. The Navy Pier was incredible: I liked the attractions a lot and the sunset by the side of Lake Michigan. Also, we could see breathtaking views from the Western Hemisphere's tallest building: the New Sears Tower Skydeck. In addition, the Cubs baseball match was pretty fun. We seemed like real Americans there!
When having lunch or dinner, we were very well treated. I especially remember the Cheesecake Factory, the most original restaurant I have ever been in. What was curious is that it was not difficult to find a person who spoke Spanish at the restaurant, at the hotel, etc. We visited Roberto Clemente High School. There we attended some of their classes and ate at the cafeteria. Lots of students had Hispanic relatives, so they spoke Spanish easily. The HS had nine floors, an elevator, and metal detectors at the entrance (it would be really weird to see that in Spain!)
At the Model UN Conference, we debated about Access to Primary Education. It was a great opportunity for me: I met people and I talked in English with foreign students. What more could I ask for?
In short, this has been a challenging, amazing, and fun experience, which of course, I would like to repeat. I encourage you all to experience it. Tried and tested: you would never forget it!
