We are some students from “Avenida de los Toreros” High School in Madrid who have taken part in an Exchange Programme with Deyes High School in Maghull. We stayed for seven days with English families: Ruby Joelson, Jake Williams, Emma Halon, Laura Grant, Jenny Southern, Vicky Francis, Lauren Gouldbourne. We have experienced English life, culture and customs and it was a great experience. All the families were very kind to us and helped us to understand them in English. We have improved our English and learned expressions used by teenagers and in daylife, which are not in our text books.
The first day we visited the school, which is bigger than ours and it has huge sport fields. Then we travelled to Southport where we walked along the pier but we couldn’t see the sea because the tide was out. We also went shopping and to a mirror room where we enjoyed. In the afternoon we went to the Bowlling Alley with our English friends and then to MacDonals. The next day we travelled to Chester, Mrs Teare, the teacher of Spanish, drove us there in the school minibus. We liked Chester very much it was the most beautiful city we visited. The following day we took a sightseeing tour bus round Liverpool, which we think it is a gorgeous city with a big and nice river. Then we visited the Beatles museum which is very funny and interesting.
At the week-end we went by train to Liverpool together with our English friends to do some shopping. On Saturday evening we went to Lauren Gouldbourne birthday party and there we have a lot of fun. And on Sunday evening we attended a rock concert.
Finally on Monday, the day we left, we attended classes at school and we experienced English school life which is a little different from ours. In our school most teachers change classrooms instead of students and our school fields are much smaller as we are in the centre of Madrid.
Our school has taken part in two exchange programmes with Deyes High School and some of the English and one Spanish students were in both of them. Mrs Sara Teare, Isabel Marcitllach and Margarita Crespo were the English and Spanish coordinator teachers. We liked the experience very much, it was wonderful and great. We think that it is very important to learn a foreign language to communicate with students and people from other cultures. Staying with families and hosting foreign students is a phantastic way of experiencing life, culture and customs from other countries. And also a great opportunity to practise a language. We recommend it to any student and we hope to continue with the experience.
