GLOBAL CLASSROOMS - MODEL UN CONFERENCE:

MADRID

This year (2007-2008), a group of 22 students from IES Avenida de los Toreros participated in a program called "Global Classrooms." Eric Cates, the Fulbright English teaching assistant, prepared the students for the Model United Nations Conference that was held in Madrid on February 15, 2008. From September to February, the students (4 from Year 2 of the ESO, and 18 from Year 4) learned about the organization of the United Nations, including UN debating procedures. They also researched a particular country in the UN and a global problem related to that country, such as global warming, access to primary education, and the situation in Darfur. On the day of the conference, they acted as delegates of their respective countries, debating and collaborating in English with students from other high schools in Madrid. One student from IES Avenida de los Toreros was selected to attend the international Model UN Conference in Chicago.

Overall, the Global Classrooms program not only gave students the opportunity to practice their English, but also to learn more about the United Nations and global problems that affect our world today. The English Department greatly encourages students to participate in this program in years to come.
